Meet NAO

1st Installation and configuration

1 – Take NAO out of its box
Place NAO seated, elbows on knees

2 – Turn on NAO
Press the chest button for 3 seconds

3 – Connect NAO to the Internet
Plug an Ethernet cable into the back of NAO’s head, then plug the cable into an Ethernet jack in your classroom or into a computer connected to Wi-Fi (if your computer allows Internet sharings)

4 – Access its settings
Once connected, press the chest button once, NAO will say its internet address. Open a web page and type in the address that NAO gives you.

Example: http://192.168.1.19
Username: nao
Password: nao

5 – Change its settings

From the NAO page accessed, you can change volume, or configure a WIFI network to use.
This also the place to change the language of NAO to use the foreign language learning activities.

Please note: if you change the Internet network, NAO will change the Internet address, you will have to repeat point 4. A restart may be necessary

Understanding NAO Modes

NAO can be set in 2 different modes:

  • Application mode: NAO runs installed applications and use predefined behaviors and interactions.
  • NAO Activities mode: NAO uses generative AI to interact with users.

 

 

Green foot LEDs = NAO Activities (IA) mode activated

Foot LEDs off = programmed applications mode

NAO Application mode (feet LED Off)
NAO Activities mode (feet LED Green)

Turning NAO ON and OFF

to Turn ON NAO, press the Chest Button once (~1 second).

 

to Turn OFF NAO, press the Chest Button until NAO says “Gnuk Gnuk (~3 seconds).

Recharge NAO

Plug in NAO when the battery is empty. 

NAO can continue to be used while charging.

 

 

A full battery can power NAO for 45 to 90 minutes, depending on what the robot is doing

Put NAO in Rest Mode

Press the Chest Button twice to turn off NAO’s motors.

 

When the engines are off, you can transport it or change its position.

Press the Chest Button twice to re-ignite its motors.

Manipulate NAO

Hold NAO by the waist to wear it without pinching.

Carry NAO in rest mode.

Talk to NAO

When NAO’s eyes are blue, NAO is listening to you.

It’s your turn to speak!

 

 

Stay in his field of vision when you speak, try to speak loudly and face NAO.

Read a Notification

The Chest Button flashes when there is a pending Notification.

 

Press the Chest Button once, NAO will
tell you what the Notification is

Special Operations

Force Turn OFF

Use this only if the normal turn OFF does not work. 

The Forced Turn OFF is not recommended in normal use. 


Hold NAO carefully because the motors will turn OFF and NAO might fall. 

Do not place your fingers near the joints, you could get pinched. 


Press and hold the Chest Button until NAO turns OFF (~8 seconds).

Special Start-up

When NAO is OFF, you can press and hold the Chest Button until the Chest Button LEDs become blue
(~5 seconds) to perform a special start-up.

 

This will reinstall all the robot firmware. 

You can use this to try solve some errors.

 

This process takes long (~15 minutes), and you should not need to do this on a regular basis.

 

Make sure you plug your Battery Charger to NAO, so the process is not interrupted.

The process is complete when NAO wakes up and says “Ognak Gnuk”.

Cleaning

Make sure NAO is turned OFF and unplugged.

 

  • Clean and disinfect your robot using alcohol (such as Isopropyl) based disinfectant wipes.
  • Do not use water. Do not get NAO wet and never handle the robot with wet hands.
  • Do not use ammonia-based products.
  • Do not oil the joints.
